WasteCo field trip
Our Canterbury Sustainability Committee and apprentices visited WasteCo’s Christchurch sorting facility recently to find out what happens to waste that goes into general site waste skips.
While we sort what we can into separate bins, the general waste skip is an important catch-all on larger building sites, and sometimes the only waste option on space-restricted smaller sites.
It was interesting to hear where site waste goes; for example, polystyrene is compressed into blocks and sent as far away as Germany.
Seeing the contents of a skip being carefully sorted by hand was a timely reminder to consider the next people in the chain, even when we’re chucking stuff in the bin.
Some great learnings for our team to take back to site as we endeavour to reduce waste going to landfill.
