Student visit to Antrim House
We recently hosted the next generation of architects from Victoria University of Wellington on a tour around the inside of Antrim House.
Part of their Heritage Conservation course, this was a great chance to share what’s been going on beyond the scaffold.
We’ve used a bespoke mix of modern and traditional techniques in the restoration of this 118-year-old Historic Place Category 1 building. We drilled twelve 14-metre cores in the existing chimney and installed post-tension bars, as well as building a plywood diaphragm and jack frame supports in the existing ceiling. We’ve also reinstated the collar-type props that were destroyed in a fire in the 1940s and removed and replaced damaged sarking with native timber boards. Classic Metal have been with us on site installing the new lead dome.
Set for completion any day now, we’re excited to have been part of restoring one of Wellington’s oldest buildings so it can go on to stand the test of time.
