Roof slate recycling
Beneath the shrink wrap at Turnbull House, the team have been replacing all the roof slate to restore the building’s appearance as closely as possible to when it was built in 1916.
The slates are mostly either damaged or nearing the end of their lifespan, but we’ve found a new home for them.
The heritage slate (over 100 years old!) was carefully removed and sorted into salvageable and non-salvageable. We partnered with Woods Waste to recycle approximately six tonnes of unusable slate, which will be crushed and repurposed for their driveway. Any slate in good condition will be reused down the road at Old St Paul’s to replace sections of their existing roof.
This is a particularly cool circular movement between two significant Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga properties, who say restoration of heritage places isn’t just about conserving the past – it’s a smarter, more sustainable path forward proving that reuse and adaptation can rival demolition and new builds, both economically and environmentally.
