Demolition, façade retention and earthworks in a live school environment.
The grand Main Building at Wellington East Girl’s College in Mt Victoria was completed in 1925, and has a Historic Place Category 1 listing.
In 2014 our Wellington team began a complex engineering project to demolish part of this prominent Wellington landmark, while retaining and strengthening the façade in preparation for a rebuild to take place at a later date.
We developed a method of removing 15,700m³ of excavated material from an at-risk bank and built an engineered compacted fill retaining wall. This part of the project was completed over the winter, with works managed to suit the conditions.
We installed extensive support framing for the heritage façade, and diverted services to the newly erected pre-fab school buildings. Another part of the services work was to upgrade the security systems throughout the college, and to install temporary security and fire protection systems.
Meticulous programming and extensive communication was necessary to successfully complete this project within an operating school, with careful management of deliveries and noise. We also implemented strict safety protocols and constructed more than 150 metres of temporary hoardings to partition the site.
This is just one of the projects we’ve completed at Wellington East Girl’s College and neighbouring Wellington College, including extensive leaky building remediation works.
