Value engineering “above and beyond the call of duty.”
We were engaged to build a new three-storey classroom block at Lynfield College. The building provides 30 general learning spaces, three teaching resource spaces and toilets on each level. A central feature staircase provides internal egress, with a lift servicing all levels.
A tiered courtyard provides outdoor access and areas for planting. A concrete deck wraps around the north and east elevations, accessed via precast concrete stairs with profiled aluminium balustrades. Extensive glazing to the south and west elevations in conjunction with the extended soffit provides optimal natural light throughout the school year while limiting radiant heat gain in the summer. The warm roof system ensures excellent thermal efficiency and acoustic performance.
With the build located in the middle of the busy school, challenges successfully handled by the team included identifying an array of existing in-ground services and safely working around the 900-strong student body. They engaged frequently with the school community, sponsoring the robotics team, engaging the Food Tech team to provide catering, and hosting a number of staff and students on site as the build neared completion.
Our team excelled in providing a quality final product, maximising the client’s budget with value engineering that the PQS acknowledged as going “above and beyond the call of duty.” We delivered on time and to the delight of the Ministry of Education and College.
