Careful combination of old & new results in a thoroughly modern civic & events facility.
Our project at the Lower Hutt Town Hall and Events Centre was to strengthen and refurbish the 1950’s era Town Hall and Clock Tower and build a new Events Centre on the site of the old Horticultural Hall. After three years, a careful combination of old and new has resulted in a thoroughly modern community and events facility.
Extensive temporary works and staging played a significant part in the planning and delivery of the refurbishment of the Town Hall and Clock Tower. We installed a carefully engineered series of props to support the walls as we completed a full seismic upgrade.
We removed, refurbished and reinstated many of the original features in the Town Hall, including the native timber flooring, which help to preserve its heritage character.
While a fairly straightforward new build, the ceiling in the Events Centre conceals a complex network of services, including lighting and audio-visual. We worked with the design team to ensure that the roof structure would support a complete suspended scaffold, allowing the services to be installed without slowing down the rest of the build below.
The rejuvenated Town Hall links to the Events Centre via a spacious new atrium, and is adjacent to the administration building that we re-built in an earlier project. There are also a range of meeting rooms and smaller function spaces, a large commercial kitchen and an onsite café in the complex, which contributes to an emerging dining and entertainment hub in the Lower Hutt Civic Precinct.
