Brook Sanctuary volunteer day
Our Nelson team completed their final volunteer day for 2024 at the Brook Sanctuary.
The Brook Sanctuary has recently taken over the Brook Campground, with the aim of generating additional income for the sanctuary. Gibbons Naylor’s volunteers were assigned a spot of painting, helping to refresh some cabins ahead of the summer camping season.
Once we were done, we had a tour of a small section of the massive 700 hectares of land that the sanctuary covers, located just behind Nelson’s CBD. The grounds are fully fenced with predator fencing and equipped with monitoring wire that runs along the top. This wire alerts the response team of “breaches” to the fence, e.g. tree or branch damage. The response team then has a 1-hour window to get to the breached area and repair the fence before predators can gain access to the sanctuary. As well as the perimeter fencing, the sanctuary has roughly 3,500 trapping and tracking units scattered across the grounds. More than 350 volunteers help to monitor these units.
It was a great day spent helping out in our local community and learning about the huge amount of work that goes into maintaining one of Nelson’s treasured local attractions.
