Brick Bay Folly 2022
We’ve been sponsoring the Brick Bay design competition for three years, working with with each year’s successful student designers as they bring their creations to life.
As well as being a major financial sponsor, our Design Manager Philip Haycock serves as a judge and mentor for the competition, which is a rare opportunity for student designers to get hands-on building experience as they build their design at Brick Bay Sculpture Trail in Snells Beach.
This year’s winning entry, The Nest, captured the zeitgeist perfectly by being built from wood recycled from a previous entry, The Wood Pavilion.
Philip enjoyed working with the team, all University of Auckland MArch students, as they dismantled the previous folly and built their design. His contribution as a mentor including talking through the structural buildability, documentation-to-build and building logistics issues as they took their design from concept to completion.
It’s great to influence and educate the students about “the building process” and how possible it is to design creatively whilst recognising what makes it buildable.
