Auckland beach clean-ups
Our Auckland team have been out on the water with Sea Cleaners, cleaning up local waterways.
The first day was on the beaches around Waiheke Island, where we picked up three cubic metres of rubbish and collected a good haul of mussel buoys. The buoys will be cleaned up and sold back to mussel farmers. Our team were surprised by how much commercial and recreational fishing rubbish they picked up.
The second day was spent cleaning up the East Tāmaki River. We gathered five cubic metres of rubbish, including two tyres, lots of bottles, a timber pallet, old pipes and a sculpture. They found it eye-opening and confronting to see how much rubbish was lying around the sea, coastline and mangroves.
Sea Cleaners are out on the water every day, removing over 12.7 million litres of waste from our waterways since 2002. They’re always looking for volunteers – find out more at seacleaners.com
