Merivale Mall upgrade, Christchurch

To modernise the ambience and enhance customer experience at Merivale Mall, centre manager AMP engaged Naylor Love to deliver a large-scale revamp of the popular Christchurch shopping centre. The scope for the 19-month project comprised structural strengthening, major services upgrades, and extensive interior and exterior refurbishment.

The new entrances and façade were a major component of the work, featuring structural steel, floor to ceiling glazing and skylights, and neolith stone cladding. Glass and steel canopies adorn the entrances, offering a luxurious and welcoming exterior.

Internal work comprised floor levelling and replacement of tiling; bulkhead upgrades and repositioning of lease lines to extend shop fronts; installation of cove and decorative pendant lights; new carpeting on upstairs levels; reconfiguration and refurbishment of amenities with plumbing services upgrades; and new painting throughout. The resulting atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a relaxed elegance befitting the boutique retail destination.

The Naylor Love team fostered an open and communicative relationship with centre management throughout the work, prioritising tenant and shopper comfort. Most of the internal work was carried out at night time, requiring stringent dust control and tenancy protection, as well as cleaning and making good every morning prior to trading. We ran a complex programme to accommodate the operating hours of both the retail and hospitality tenants, ensuring Merivale Mall continued to trade safely and with minimal disruption for the duration of the project.
