High profile local landmark given a new lease on life in record time.
Our Central Otago Projects & Interiors team repainted the Cromwell Fruit Sculpture, a giant fibreglass apple, nectarine, pear and apricot that welcome visitors to the town.
At 17 metres of the ground at its highest point, our first challenge was to find a skilled artist with height safety training. Noted street artist DEOW (Danny Owens) fitted the bill, using a mobile elevated work platform (MEWP) for safe and efficient access around the awkward shapes.
Our team waterblasted the sculpture, then DEOW arrived to prime, re-paint and seal it with a UV clear coat. In total, he used 100 litres of primer, 100 litres of water-based acrylic paint, and 72 litres of clear coat to rejuvenate the fruit.
With the weather cooperating in the exposed, windy location, we completed the project in just 14 days, well under the month it took when the sculpture had its last facelift in 2016. It’s great to see the distinctive local landmark looking good enough to eat.
