Works focused on providing an improved shopping experience without causing disruption.
Our project at Pak’nSave Petone was two interfacing projects – the construction of a car park canopy, and the extension of the store foyer and offices.
The canopy was commissioned by the store owner to ensure that his customers have a dry shopping experience. Works included a 3,520m2 glue laminated timber canopy structure and associated carpark works. The building is located above one of the major fault lines in Wellington, so the design had to allow for major seismic movement. This structure was tested when we experienced a 6.5 magnitude quake during construction. Footage from the carpark cameras showed cars in the carpark rocking back and forth with the canopy structure barely moving.
The extension works included a 5 metre wide extension to the store front and renovation of the existing mezzanine level office. The extension consisted of a structural steel frame clad in Kingspan roof and facade panels. After careful planning, innovative thinking, and a lot of grace from the Pak’nSave staff, the existing external wall was removed and reinstated while the office remained fully functional.
